Moss Edge Farm, Cockerham, has been in the Holmes Family for five generations with Steven planning on being the sixth. With the farm having ceased milking in 1986, it has since reared beef cattle, produced cereals, provided winter grazing for sheep, made high quality haylage, stored and sold straw, housed cattle for neighbouring farms and provided services from cultivation to bailing. All these enterprises have helped the farm stay sustainable, however Steven soon realised that a new direction for Moss Edge Farm was needed.

Steven was aware that craft beer market was growing and spotted an opportunity to be part of it. He was already passionate about craft beer and wanted to move in this direction with the farm. With the support from his parents, the Rural Development Programme and NatWest, Farm Yard Ales was created. Everything was built from scratch, the steel framed building and the sloping floors have all been carefully designed to house a 2,000 litre brew plant and all the associated equipment.
